The Gallery of Ser Aedh III: The Mausoleum

You enter the pitch mausoleum, the door creaking once more as you push it open.  The air is dry, though it smells stale.  A slight breeze blows from a dark corner, providing mildewy whiffs as you enter.

Before you lies a sarcophagus illuminated by the seeping light of the Blood Moon, cracked and ruined; it seems as worn as the marble archway under which you had just passed.

The Sarcophagus

Atop the stone coffin is a figure hewn from stone, worn and expressionless save for a crude beard and what once may have been a crown.  He clutches sword and shield.  Faint runes remain on the shield's face, running along the borders of the edge.

The sarcophagus itself is surrounded by small pillars, each with faint etchings of their own, each supported by a short figure of sculpted marble.

Blackness remains in the surrounding space, and you here a slight, rhythmic scraping...

A Shadow Emerges

Upon entering the mausoleum, Jenisys is uneasy about the sound heard throughout. Gathering her courage she uses detect evil searching for concentrations of evil in this tomb. Jenisys moves towards the pillars to further investigate their etchings.

Using Detect Evil, Jenisys is looking for greater concentrations of evil than would be found throughout. Also let it be known that Paladins having an aura of Protection from Evil with a 10 ft radius.

Amberdin's torch spills light upon the pillars. As you peer more closely at the etchings, you notice they portray the following scenes:

-A group of men battling a horrific monster
-A man roasting a humanoid figure over a spit
-A man surrounded by others brandishing weapons
-A man's head on a pike surrounded by crows

She detects evil on the tunnel from which the sound is eminating.

If you look in Osric under Paladin abilities it shows that detect evil is a 60 ft radius.

    4. You turn your attention to the newly discovered passage and, while muttering prayers to Keirsin, raise your open palm upon that which you believe harbors ire.

Alas! there is no blight here.

      [OOC]

Actually detect evil has a Range of 60 ft. When relevant the other Paladin abilities are stated to function as the equivalent Clerical spell, so that is how I will rule Detect evil.

It is not passive, so I want you to tell me specifically what you are concentrating upon.

Amberdin’s eyes narrow at the moonlit room before him. He scans the perimeter, noting the pillars surrounding the sarcophagus. To banish the darkness, he takes a torch from his backpack and sets it aflame. “Be cautious of your step,” he whispers into the darkness “and wary of your touch.” Taking his torch, he scans the rest of the mausoleum for the source of the scratching.
    [Tech]
Amberdin moves into the room and steps to the side of the doorway. He lights a torch and sweeps the darkness noting the remaining structural features and tries to use his eyes in conjunction with his hearing to locate the source of the mysterious noise.

As your torch springs to life, stark shadows are cast from the pillars, reaching into the room like black fingers. AS you shine the light around the room you notice a small passage in the far left (northern) corner. The scraping seems to be echoing from this corridor.

A faint light flashes from beyond, and you can see this passage turns after a ways.

Following behind Jenisys into the crypt, an overwhelming sensation of death surrounds me. I feel it coming from the tomb itself. Walking over to the sarcophagus, I move to the face of the stone figure atop the lid. Peering at the face, I attempt to find any distinguishing characteristics to help me determine the race of this person.

A sigh of relief escapes my breath, for it is human; however, in the back of my mind, I realize that if anything is inside, it could still be quite deadly. Investigating further, I peer down at the sword and shield the he bears.

I look down at the sword and shield in search of a symbol, or a relationship between the runes on the shield and the runes on the pillars.

As you all turn your gaze towards the narrow corridor, the cracks between the cobbles seem to vomit black shadow, and before you materializes a black silhouette, almost disappearing into the blackness of the surrounding crypt.

As it enters the chamber, all of your magical items begin to radiate a cold, pale light, illuminating the chamber in an eerie blue-white glow.

Silently, it blows towards Jenisys as if on the wind. Its cold touch wraps around her exposed neck, but she shies away, breaking whatever spell this creature attempted. A cold and distant scream, and a ghostly sword passes through her torso leaving her reeling in pain.

Gathering its strength once more, it extends it finger upwards, voicing arcane words that warp your senses, sending black tendrils of jet spiraling around the room. They find their marks unerringly (magic missile, Amberdin: 5 dmg, Jenisys: 5 dmg, Lagormeth: 2 dmg), sizzling into your flesh.
